A moving date does not tell you when a property will be ready for cleaning. Boxes can block floors, movers may still be carrying furniture through rooms, and the person with the key may already be at the next property. A short handoff plan helps everyone understand when work can begin.

Work backward from the walkthrough

Record the final walkthrough or possession time, then list the work that needs to happen before it. Confirm cleaning availability directly before treating a slot as booked. Allow for packing, removal and any repair work that must finish first. If the date changes, tell the cleaner before the appointment.

Give each task an owner

Write down who removes belongings, clears food from appliances, handles unwanted items and supplies access. Do not assume a cleaning appointment includes packing, furniture moving or hauling. For an occupied property, identify which rooms and surfaces will be accessible. For an empty property, confirm that it will actually be empty when the team arrives.

Check the details that change the scope

Cabinet interiors, appliance interiors, windows and other detailed work should appear in the agreed estimate when included. Note anything that needs repair or specialist attention. Cleaning should not be represented as repair, and an appointment cannot guarantee a landlord’s deposit decision or a buyer’s acceptance.

Confirm the handoff

Before the visit, confirm access arrangements and required utilities with the cleaning company. Keep codes and sensitive access information out of public worksheets or photos. Arrange how completion questions will be handled and who can approve a change in scope.

Keep a simple record

Use the Moving-Day Cleaning Handoff Planner to list the task, responsible person, deadline and confirmation. At the walkthrough, record any outstanding item and the next agreed action. A record is more useful than assuming everyone remembers the same conversation.

The best time to discuss these details is before moving day. Share the property location, whether it will be occupied, your actual deadline and the work you want included when requesting an estimate.
